BEILEIN CONFIRMED TO COMMISSION OF CORRECTIONS

Senator George D. Maziarz is pleased to announce that the State Senate today unanimously confirmed former Niagara County Sheriff Thomas A. Beilein as a Member of the New York State Commission of Correction, which oversees local jails.

Governor David A. Paterson nominated Sheriff Beilein, an Appleton resident, to the post on July 9, 2008.

“Tom Beilein has a long record of distinguished service in law enforcement,” Senator Maziarz said.  “Throughout his career, Tom has served Niagara County extremely well, and now his responsibilities will be statewide.  He will do a terrific job in this new assignment, and it’s great to have such a highly qualified local person in this leadership role.”

After serving as a medic with the United States Army during the war in Vietnam, Beilein began working in the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office as a Deputy in 1969.  Beilein rose through the ranks in the Sheriff’s Office, eventually becoming Chief Investigator and Director of the Niagara County Major Crime Strike Force.  Beilein became Niagara County Sheriff in 1994 and served several terms in office until his recent retirement.

The three-member Commission of Correction promulgates minimum standards, evaluates, and investigates jails to ensure safe and humane conditions.  Beilein’s term will expire on December 31, 2012.
